Shurat HaDin's Defend & Protect Israeli Soldiers Project focuses on safeguarding Israel, its officials and soldiers - physically, emotionally and also legally, against allegations of international law violations. Shurat HaDin works to turn the tables on Israel's enemies and accuse the accusers, to assert authentic legal claims against the terrorist groups and provide safety and security to our own citizens, while initiating strategies to defend and protect IDF soldiers globally. Shurat HaDin goes on the offensive at the International Criminal Court (ICC), researches and disseminates authoritative human rights reports, and hosts the Law Center's signature Law & War Conference in Jerusalem.
Shurat HaDin on the Offensive at the ICC
Shurat HaDin has taken the lead in documenting violations and filing communications in the ICC of war crimes and human rights abuses committed by the Palestinian Authority, Fatah, Hamas, Hezbollah Islamic Jihad and Palestinian leaders against Israelis and their own civilian population. These criminal complaints expose the real perpetrators of war crimes - the terrorist groups -and serve to highlight the enormous differences between the cruel and illegal acts taken by Palestinian terrorists and the very dangerous security situations that Israeli soldiers so often face. For example, in September 2018 Shurat HaDin President Nitsana Darshan-Leitner accompanied a group of Israeli farmers to The Hague to lead a tractor demonstration in front of the ICC, while filing a criminal communication against Hamas leaders for the murder of Palestinian civilians, the arson of Jewish agricultural fields destruction and use of Gaza children as human shields.
Shurat HaDin's Human Rights Reports
Shurat HaDin works with a team of experts to document human rights abuses perpetrated by Palestinians against their own population. These reports provide important context for understanding the causes of Palestinian causalities and suffering. They counter the critics who seek to accuse Israel and its soldiers. For example, in 2018 Shurat HaDin prepared a detailed and factual report in response to a UNICEF inquiry about the Gaza border riots, demonstrating numerous human rights abuses inflicted upon Palestinian women and children by Palestinian leaders and terrorist groups during these riots.
Shurat HaDin's Law & War Conference
Shurat HaDin organizes and hosts a series of major public conferences on Law & War in the age of asymmetrical terrorist warfare, with expert presentations and panels to debate important legal principles crucial to the real-life dangers confronting Israeli soldiers on the battlefield. These discussions serve to investigate accepted legal norms that must be applied equally and consistently to all nations and all sides of an armed conflict. The Law & War Conferences have featured an impressive array of legal scholars, commentators and military and political leaders. The third Law & War Conference is scheduled for June 2019 in Jerusalem.
