At only twelve, Marva Zohar underwent and survived a violent gang rape by a group of grown men. As an adult, suffering from PTSD and its severe symptoms, she had tried reaching for help. Yet instead, Marva realized that she is being silenced, experiencing more violence and additional trauma. The abuse she had both experienced and witnessed, during her hospitalization in a mental hospital, finally led Marva to try and take her own life. Marva survived, but, tragically, seven of her closest friends—all women who were also victims of sexual violence—committed suicide.
Marva is the visionary behind Amen, and she needs our help to realize her vision.
Sexual violence is the most abhorrent and cancerous affliction of our generation. With time, each and every one of us will be asked: “were you part of the problem?” “Were you silent in facing those atrocities?” Or, “were you part of the solution?”
In Hebrew, the word Amen epitomizes an agreement to believe. We believe women when they tell their stories; we believe that women have the power and an innate wisdom that, given the right conditions, will allow them to heal.
Amen is a village for healing, recovery and hope. It is formed as a residential trauma treatment program – set to be opened in Israel and then spread and be copied worldwide.
We refuse to live in a world where women—either victims of rape at childhood or as adults—are left with no choice but to commit suicide for lack of a compassionate, respectful and accommodating place to heal.
We are joining forces to raise funds, gain support and put this vital cause on everyone’s agenda.
Join us, to be part of the solution.
