Recently, the Agunah crisis has been everywhere. We can’t ignore it anymore. It’s real, and it’s urgent. It’s time to act.
In the past month, we’ve received countless phone calls and emails from community rabbis, educators, and high school students, desperately seeking a way to get involved. Everyone has the same question bubbling beneath the surface: How can I help?
A call with a high school administrator expressed that their students were feeling particularly angry, helpless, frustrated. How can we convert these feelings into action? How can we channel these feelings of helplessness into avenues for change?
Chana has been an Agunah for nearly five years now. Shira, for ten years, and Rivka, for twelve. Each of these women has children, debt, and a world of uncertainty ahead of them. More than 70 women in situations like Chana, Shira, and Rivka make up ORA’s caseload. We’ve helped them navigate the beth din process, galvanized rabbis and community leaders to get involved, and advocated for their freedom. But the need is so great, the system so complex, the abuse so profound. These women need ORA’s help now more than ever. And we need yours.
How can we free Chana, Shira, Rivka, and every Agunah?
Lawyers, rabbis, mental health professionals, college students, professors, social media advocates all have found a way to make a change. They’ve created classes, volunteered their professional hours pro bono, created communal task forces and funds. They’ve hosted postnup parties, organized rallies, wrote essays and op eds.
Everyone has a role in ending the Agunah Crisis. In our 19 years of doing this work, we’ve seen professionals across the field find ways to take a stand.
